Volleyball picks up first win of the season

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida The American International College volleyball team finished the opening weekend in Florida with a split between Minnesota-Duluth and Post University.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE:
  • AIC and Minnesota-Duluth were going head-to-head early in the first set. With the score tied 5-5, the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to make it 15-5 and run away with the first set, 25-12.
  • The second set was a set of runs for each team. The first run came with AIC down 8-7. The Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run to make it 11-7. AIC answered with a 5-1 run to tie the game at 12, but the Bulldogs added five straight to take command of the game.
  • In the final set, 20 of the Bulldogs' point came off multiple point sprees.


GAME TWO:
  • In the first set, the Yellow Jackets were down 4-2 before making a 5-0 run to give them their first lead of the match.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored four points from for different people when they went on a 4-0 run to take the 21-14 lead, with a kill by Rivas-Reyes, kill by Potic, an error by the Eagles, and an ace by Kopren. Mary Kelly aced the set point to give AIC their first set of the day.
  • AIC started the second set on a 10-2 run. Down 15-6, the Eagles took 10 of the next 11 points to make it a three point game before falling in the set, 25-19.
  • Another AIC opening run gave them momentum early in the third set, 8-1. Kopren was a part of six of those eight points, with three assists and three aces.
  • The Yellow Jackets went on a 9-0 run later in the set to give them the 17-4 lead. The Eagles did not break into the double digits until AIC had scored 20 points. They then rallied off seven points to make it a 21-17 game before the Yellow Jackets forced a service error. Boele ended the match with a kill from Kopren to give AIC their first win of the season.

GAME NOTES:
  • For the first time since 2011, the Yellow Jackets dropped at least three of their first four matches.
  • For the third time in three seasons, the Yellow Jacket have faced a top-25 AVCA opponent.
  • AIC gave up 42 fewer kills on day two of the invite than they did on the first.
  • Post swung just 0.055 in the match against AIC. The last time the Yellow Jackets forced a team under that was on October 29, 2016 against Saint Michael's.

  • The Yellow Jackets will face off against Chestnut Hill, Wilmington, Philadelphia University, and Holy Family in the Wildcat Invite hosted by Wilmington. AIC with play Chestnut Hill on September 8th at 1 p.m., then Wilmington at 5 p.m.
