Men's soccer drops close match to No. 7 LIU Post

GARDEN CITY, New York - The American International College men's soccer team fell to No. 7 LIU Post in the second game of the Adelphi Tournament on Saturday, September 2.

  • Oliver Hessner Hansen (one goal allowed, two saves)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers struck first at exactly 15 minutes into the game off a goal from Lukas Ostermann.
  • AIC kept the Pioneers within reach from that point, allowing just one shot on goal for the remainder of the half.
  • The Yellow Jackets tied things up in the 51st minute off a finish from sophomore forward Steven Hernandez.
  • AIC aggressively kept up with LIU - even notching three consecutive shots in the 57th minute, the first two of which were blocked and the third saved. But LIU got the final goal of the game off a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
  • The Yellow Jackets had three corner kick attempts in the 82nd and 83rd minutes, but were not able to score a goal in the final moments of the game.


GAME NOTES:
  • Hernandez, who was AIC's second-leading scorer in 2016, notched his first goal of the year in Saturday's game.
  • LIU Post, which finished the 2017 season with a nearly flawless 18-1-1 record, was selected by coaches to win the East Coast Conference in 2017. A year ago, the Pioneers scored a league-leading 3.05 goals per contest.


COACH'S CORNER:
  • "As the cliché goes, it was a game of two halves," said AIC coach Luke Perry. "The first half, we looked nervous, tentative, but the second half, we came out and really took the game to them. . I'm very proud of how the guys came out for the second half. We're starting to earn a lot of respect, and hopefully we can use this confidence to go on to our next game."

  • The Yellow Jackets will host their home opener in a nonconference matchup against the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday, September 5.
