Volleyball drops home opener to Edinboro

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College volleyball team opened the 2017 home season on Friday, September 15, dropping a hard-fought match by a score of 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Yellow Jackets allowed the Fighting Scots to gain a 3-0 lead in the first set before taking the 4-3 lead.
  • The two would trade streaks in the set, but the Fighting Scots used a late five-point run to give them the 22-21 lead. It was all tied up at 23 when the Yellow Jackets took the 24-23 lead, but Edinboro took the next three points to take the first game 26-24.
  • The Yellow Jackets used a late 8-0 run late to take the second set and tie the match at one each.
  • AIC came out on an early run to take the 7-3 lead. The Fighting Scots would regain the 15-13 lead in the third set. AIC trailed 24-23 in the third set, but it took four of the next five points to take the set, 27-25, and a 2-1 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets got the early lead in hopes to take the match, but Edinboro came back and made it a 5-4 game. The Fighting Scots used a couple of runs to force a fifth set, 25-21.
  • The fifth set proved to be just as exciting as the other four, as the Yellow Jackets started out on a 10-5 streak. That did not get the Fighting Scots down, as they rallied back to take the 14-13 lead then the match, 15-13.
GAME NOTES:
  • Rivas-Reyes moved into seventh place in AIC history in all-time kills with 840. She is currently chasing Taila de Souza, who has 857 career kills.
  • Rivera is now just 267 digs away from becoming the career leader in digs in program history. She She trails Caitlin Connelly who has 1,896.

NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets will host the second day of that Yellow Jacket Invite on Saturday, September 16. AIC will play Edinboro in a rematch at 10 a.m. followed by a matchup with Southern New Hampshire at 2 p.m.
