SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts The American International College women's soccer team suffered a 4-1 loss at the hands of Mercy College to open the 2017 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first half hour, the Yellow Jackets struck first on a set piece in the 32nd minute, with a fake by Johanna Englund allowing Johanna Nilsson to find Linnea Herbertsson open at the top of the box for the first goal of the year for AIC.
- Mercy struck back late in the half, scoring with six minutes left on the clock.
- The Mavericks dominated the second half, scoring two goals in 3:15 to take a 3-1 lead in the 61st minute and burying a breakaway in the final minute for the 4-1 score.
GAME NOTES:
- The team has not won a season opener since 2013, when they last hosted the AIC Soccer Classic; they won 2-0 over Bridgeport on September 6, 2013.
- For the third straight season, AIC scored exactly one goal against Mercy; in both 2015 and 2016, the Yellow Jackets won 1-0.
- AIC had not surrendered four goals in a game since a 4-1 loss in the NCAA Semifinal against eventual champion Grand Valley State on December 5, 2013; the last regular season game in which AIC allowed four goals was September 26, 2009 at UMass Lowell.
COACH'S CORNER:
"Tonight, we only played 45 minutes and the score line showed that," head coach Kevon Isa said. "We've got to play 90 minutes. We were better in the first half, but they were better in the second half."

- The Yellow Jackets will face off against national No. 7 Bridgeport on Sunday, September 3 in the final game of the AIC Soccer Classic. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
