Women's soccer topples #7 Bridgeport

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts-The American International College women's soccer team handed the 7th-ranked University of Bridgeport a 2-0 loss at Abdow Field on September 3.

FAST FACTS:
FINAL SCORE: AIC 2, #7 Bridgeport 0
RECORDS: AIC splits the weekend and is 1-1-0, while Bridgeport falls to 0-2-0.
LOCATION: Abdow Field (Springfield, Massachusetts)

STAT LEADERS:

AIC:
Federica Frew (one goal)
Johanna Englund (one goal)
Mikayla Demanche (seven save shutout)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Federica Frew drew a penalty kick just 5:15 into the contest and slotted it low-left for the opening and ultimately winning goal.
  • Midway through the first half, hard work by Rachel Brown and Kelly Koslosky forced a corner, which Johanna Englund bent directly into the net for the 2-0 lead.
  • AIC's defense stymied Bridgeport, holding the Purple Knights to one shot on goal in the second half.

GAME NOTES:
  • The shutout win was the first clean sheet of Mikayla Demanche's soccer career.
  • All three AIC goals on the weekend were off of set pieces or penalty kicks.
  • AIC last blanked a top-ten team last season, winning 1-0 at then-fourth-ranked Stonehill on October 10, 2016.

COACH'S CORNER:
"It was our goal today to work hard and play 90 minutes of soccer," head coach Kevon Isa said. "We are very happy with the result, but we will move on quickly, as we have another tough game on Friday against Bentley."

FROM THE PLAYERS:
"I knew we had to come back out, in spite of how bad the last game was. You just have to be in the zone," Demanche said of the bounce-back win. "We can't play down to teams-we came to play today and played a full ninety minutes because we knew how good they were and we wanted revenge, but we have to treat every game like that going forward."

NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets open Northeast-10 play with a tilt against Bentley on Friday, September 8 at 7 p.m. on Abdow Field.
