SCSU Overpowers Baseball

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut The American International College baseball team fell to Southern Connecticut State University by a score of 14-8 on Sunday, April 30.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets are now 14-25 overall and 8-15 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while SCSU improves to 25-10-1 and 12-1 in conference.

In a high-scoring affair with the Owls, it was SCSU who scored four times in the first inning on two RBI singles and a deep double down the left field line to make it 4-0.

The Yellow Jackets jumped back quickly, with Mike Wroth walking to start the top of the second inning. Chris Starcun followed suit with a single straight up the middle to put runners on first and second. Andrew Ciacciarelli crushed a ball down the right field line for a RBI double, scoring Wroth and sending Starcun to third. A wild pitch a batter later allowed Starcun to score from third, making it 4-2 Owls.

AIC was able to take a short lead in the third inning as the offense continued to see the ball well. Josh Aviles started with a walk and advanced to third on a Matt Krause single. After seeing Krause steal second base, Wroth reached on a fielder's choice, Krause advanced to third and Aviles scored after a throwing error by the first baseman. Another run came for AIC on a sac fly by Starcun to center field to score Krause, tying the game up 4-4. Eugene Quirk sent a double down the left field line to wrap up the scoring, sending Wroth home to make it 5-4 AIC.

Not to be outdone, the Owls scored four in the third, with a RBI single up the middle to tie the game 5-5. A two-RBI double and a RBI single pushed SCSU one run ahead of the Yellow Jackets, making it 8-5.

Two runs came across for AIC in the top of the fifth, as Krause singled through the left side to start the inning. Wroth kept the inning rolling with a single and advance to second on the unsuccessful throw to third to get Krause out. With runners on second and third, Starcun singled down the right field line to score Krause and advanced Wroth to third. Quirk hit into a double play the following at bat that allowed Wroth to score, making it 8-7 Owls.

The Owls struck next in the bottom of the sixth inning as a two-run home run down the right field line gave SCSU a 10-7 lead. Three more runs came across with a two RBI double and a balk, pushing the lead to 13-7.

The top of the eight saw the Yellow Jackets score a run as Ciacciarelli started with a walk before Travis Seymour singled to left center, putting runners on first and second. With two outs, KJ White singled to right center field to score Ciacciarelli, making it 13-8.

The Owls tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eight with a sac fly to center field, giving the Owls a 14-8 lead which they held for the remaining frame of action.

Matt Costanza (L, 4-5) got the start for the Yellow Jackets, where he went two innings and gave up 10 hits, eight runs and one walk with one strikeout. Cam Winiarz was the first of four relief pitchers used by AIC, as he went four innings, giving up four hits, three runs and three walks. Anthony Crudale came in to face three batters, going .1 inning and letting up two runs and one walk. John O'Donnell faced the next two batters, letting up one hit and one walk where Dean Streich finished the remaining 1.2 innings where he let up three hits and one run with two strikeouts.

AIC will next be in action at home on Tuesday, May 2, against the College of Saint Rose. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
