Baseball Drops Close One To Saint Rose

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College baseball team fell to the College of Saint Rose on Tuesday, May 2, by a score of 7-5.

The Yellow Jackets drop to 14-26 and 8-16 in conference while the Golden Knights improve to 7-27 and 6-15 in conference.

The Golden Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a deep single to right field, scoring runners from second and third.

AIC responded back in the bottom of the inning, with Josh Aviles sending a pitch past the shortstop for a leadoff single. Aviles stole second before scoring off a double from KJ White to make it 2-1. After advancing to third on a fly out to third, White scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Mike Wroth then singled to center to keep the inning rolling for the Yellow Jackets as Chris Starcun singled to right field, where he advanced to second on an error by the right fielder before being thrown out at third. Wroth scored from first on the RBI single by Starcun, giving AIC a 3-2 lead.

That was the last time the Yellow Jackets led, as three runs came around to score for the Golden Knights in the second inning. A fielding error by the second baseman allowed a runner from third to advance home while back-to-back RBI single scored the remaining two runs, giving the Golden Knights a 6-3 lead.

It wasn't until the top of the fifth that another run came to score, as a RBI triple with two outs put another tally on the board for the Golden Knights. The Yellow Jackets were able to get back on the board in the bottom of the sixth, with Starcun walking with two outs to start the charge. After stealing second base, Starcun made his way to third on a dropped strike three to Matt Costanza who made his way to first. Andrew Ciacciarelli drove a pitch down the left field line for a RBI double to make it a 7-4 game.

The bottom of the ninth saw the final run of the game, as AIC saw Ciacciarelli score on a groundout hit by Aviles.

Jason Coscio (L, 1-5) started for AIC, going 1.1 innings and giving up seven hits, six runs - only four were earned - and three walks. JD LeHouiller was the first relief pitcher out the pen, as he threw the next 2.2 innings and struck out two batters. Mike Wroth pitched just 1.1 innings, where he allowed one hit, one run and four walks and had one strikeout. Joe Pepe pitched the remaining 3.2 innings, where he let up two hits and struck out five.

AIC continues the year-ending homestand as they host Post University on Wednesday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m.
