Starcun's three hits not enough as Le Moyne tops baseball

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts-The American International College baseball team never recovered from a six-run third as the Le Moyne Dolphins earned a 9-4 victory in the opener of a three-game series at Bedard Field on Sunday, April 2.

AIC falls to 5-14 on the year and 1-4 in the Northeast-10.

The Jackets nearly opened the scoring in the second with two outs and two on, as catcher Eugene Quirk ripped a single to right, but right fielder Andrew Ciacciarelli was cut down at home after a brilliant throw by Le Moyne's right fielder.

That out proved to be a harbinger of things to come, as the Dolphins rallied with two outs in the top of the third, starting with a walk and putting together six straight hits, five for extra bases, to drive in six runs.

AIC did gain a run back in the home half, as first baseman Chris Starcun stroked a triple down the right field line, driving in center fielder Josh Aviles.

In the sixth, Le Moyne put another crooked number up, taking advantage of two walks followed by two singles and double to score three more times and take a 9-1 lead.

Two frames later, AIC posted a pair of runs, with third baseman K.J. White being driven in by Starcun, who doubled to the same spot he had previously tripled. Starcun then scored himself, taking two bases on a wild pitch.

In the eighth, AIC would score another, as designated hitter Dan Frawley smacked a pinch-hit single, followed by a double from right fielder Owen Wosleger and an RBI single from shortstop Brendan Carter. However, that would be as close as AIC could get in the 9-4 loss.

Jason Coscio took the loss, throwing 4+ innings and allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts to fall to 1-2 on the year; J.D. LeHouiller had a strong relief appearance, throwing 3.1 no-hit frames, walking two with one strikeout.

The Jackets and Dolphins renew hostilities at high noon on Monday, April 3 for the start of a doubleheader.
