SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts- The American International College baseball team was swept by the Le Moyne Dolphins by scores of 7-0 and 9-5 on Monday, April 3.
With the defeats, AIC drops to 5-16 overall and 1-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Le Moyne advances to 16-8 overall and 4-1 in conference.
AIC struggled against the Dolphins in the first game of the doubleheader, combining for four hits all game. Le Moyne got on the board early in the second inning, scoring two runs off of a home run to left and a run coming across in the midst of a fielding error.
The Yellow Jackets got their first runner on base in the third inning after
Joe Pepe walked and stole second. Pepe eventually was picked off for the second out of the inning. It was in the fifth inning that AIC was able to secure the first hit of the game with a
Mike Wroth missile to right field for a double. Wroth was unable to advance as the next two batters fell due to a strikeout and a ground out.
The door were finally blown off in the seventh inning after a three run home run to left field made it a 6-0 game for Le Moyne. Wroth doubled once again in the bottom portion of the inning, but was once again stranded. Le Moyne scored their seventh and last run of the game off a sac fly to deep right field to score a runner on third.
On the mound to start,
Ryan Bruning (L, 0-3) pitched six innings, giving up nine hits, five runs, four of which were earned, two walks and four strikeouts.
Brendan LaVallee was the first of three pitchers to deal an inning of relief. LaVallee let up two hits, one run, one walk and one strike out.
Kyle Simcock was next in line, allowing one hit, one run and one walk.
Tanner Brakken was the final pitcher for the Yellow Jackets, walking two runners and striking out one.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets put up more of a fight against the Dolphins, scoring five runs on six hits. Like game one, it was Le Moyne scoring first on a runner advancing on a ground out to shortstop in the first inning. The Dolphins piled on three more runs in the second inning with an RBI double down the right field line, a RBI single out to left and a SAC bunt to the pitcher to give the Dolphins a 4-0 lead. In the third inning the Yellow Jackets found life, as
Brendan Carter scored after stealing third and advancing on a throwing error by the catcher.
Matt Krause got in on the fun, sending a deep drive to center field for a two RBI double, making it 4-3 Le Moyne. The Jackets struck back in a big way in the fifth inning with a two RBI home run from Krause to left field, his third of the year, giving AIC their first lead of the game at 5-4.
It was not long before Le Moyne got back on the board, scoring two runs on a two RBI double to give the Dolphins the lead back at 6-5. Le Moyne was able to score in the seventh and eighth to advance their lead to 9-5.
The Jackets gave
Matt Costanza the start in game two, as he went 5.1 innings and got a no decision for his efforts. Costanza let up eight hits, six runs and three strikeouts.
Anthony Crudale (L,1-2) came in to pitch relief, going 1.2 innings and picked up the loss. Crudale allowed two hits, two runs, one earned and two walks.
Joe Pepe went from shortstop to pitching for the remaining two innings, letting up two hits, one unearned run and two strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets next travel to Albany, N.Y. on Tuesday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m. as they take on the Golden Knights of Saint Rose.
