Strong Seventh Inning Lifts Baseball Over Golden Knights

ALBANY, New York The American International College baseball team broke their losing streak against the Golden Knights of The College of Saint Rose by a score of 4-2.

AIC moves to 10-21 overall and is now 5-11 in the Northeast-10. Saint Rose is now 4-22 overall and 3-10 in the Northeast-10.

A scoreless contest was broken up in the bottom of the fourth by Saint Rose, where they got their first hits of the game as well, as a RBI single through the right side was all it took to advance a runner from second home for the first run of the game.

The Yellow Jackets countered in the top of the sixth where K.J White started the inning with a walk. A ground out and a single by Matt Krause put runners on the corners. Mike Wroth walked to load the bases for the Yellow Jackets. Eugene Quirk reached on a fielder's choice next, advancing Kruase and Wroth each over one base while White was tagged out at home by a throw from the third baseman. With the bases loaded, Andrew Ciacciareli drew out a walk to bring Krause home to score, tying the game 1-1.

An explosive seventh inning saw the Yellow Jackets score three runs. Brendan Carter and Josh Aviles started the inning off with back-to-back singles before a double steal put them on third and second base. A walk by White loaded the based as Chris Starcun was hit by a pitch, bringing in Carter to make it 2-1 AIC. Another walk, this time by Krause made it 3-1 Jackets, as Aviles came in to score this time. A fielder choice hit by Wroth was enough to score White from third, making it now 4-2 AIC.

The Golden Knights tried to start a rally in the bottom of the seventh, seeing a ground out second base score a runner from third to make it a two run game. That was the final time Saint Rose was able to score, as the Yellow Jackets shut them out for the remainder of the game.

Ryan Bruning (Win, 1-3) picked up his first win of the year, dealing 6.2 innings of work in the process. During his time on the mound, Bruning gave up four hits, two runs, two walks, and struck out six. Jason Coscio came in to pitch 1.1 innings, where he gave up just a single hit, walked one and struck out a batter. Joe Pepe (Save, 2) picked up his second save of the year as he was brought in to pitch the ninth inning. Pepe pitched a spotless frame along with one strikeout to secure the win.

AIC returns to action as they host the Hawks of Saint Anselm on Wednesday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. to begin a five game home stand.
