WEST PALM BEACH, Florida The American International College baseball team fell to Palm Beach Atlantic University by a score of 19-2 on Wednesday, March 15.
With the loss, AIC drops to 3-6 overall. Palm Beach improves to 15-9 overall with the win.
The Yellow Jackets came away with an early two run lead in the first inning. With two outs, Matt Krause tripled to deep right field before a single by Mike Wroth scored Krause. Colin Nicklas followed up with a single to put Yellow Jackets on first and second. A walk from Andrew Ciacciarelli set the stage with bases loaded for AIC. Joe Pepe was patient at the plate, drawing a walk that brought Wroth in for the second run.
Palm Beach would tie the game up in the second frame after a groundout that allowed a runner to score from third and a hard single down the right field line tied the game up at two for the Sailfish. After the second inning, it went downhill for the Yellow Jackets, as Palm Beach was able to score in every inning for the rest of the game. In total, the Sailfish came away with 28 hits.
The pitching for Palm Beach was on point against the AIC, with the Yellow Jackets only amounting six total hits the entire game. The Yellow Jackets did try to get their offense rolling, with Nicklas slamming a two-out triple into left center in the third inning, but he was unable to score.
AIC gave Matt Costanza (0-1) the start, as he went four complete innings but picked up the loss. Costanza let up eight hits and seven runs, but only three were earned. John O'Donnell was the first Yellow Jacket relief pitcher to enter for Costanza. O'Donnell only went a third of an inning, letting up five hits, seven runs, four earned runs and one walk. JD LeHouiller pitched the remaining 3.2 innings for the Yellow Jackets against the Sailfish. LeHouiller let up 11 hits and five runs with only three earned.
The Yellow Jackets will travel down to Miami to playagainst Florida Memorial University on Thursday, March 16 at 3 p.m.
