Florida Memorial Pushes Past Baseball With Strong Second Inning

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida The American International College baseball team dropped a close one against Florida Memorial University by a score of 4-2.

With the loss, American International moves to 3-7 overall. With the victory, Florida Memorial advances to 8-17-1.

Keeping pace with recent trends, the Yellow Jackets got on board with a run in the first inning of play. Travis Seymour started off with a double to right field before advancing to third base. K.J. White drove in Seymour with a single right up the middle to give AIC a 1-0 lead.

The Lions scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the second. With the Lions playing small ball, all they needed were singles to drive their base runners home.

AIC had a chance to score in the fourth inning with runners on first and third. Chris Starcun reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, before advancing to second on a stolen base and then taking third due to a dropped strike three call on Matt Krause. Colin Nicklas walked with two outs to get AIC their second runner aboard, but a pop out the next batter put an end to their scoring chances.

The next run for the Yellow Jackets came in the sixth inning, when White led the inning off strong with a single to left field. Starcun followed suit with a single past the second baseman to give AIC runners on first and third. Krause grounded to the shortstop for the first out, but not before White was able to score. AIC was able to get Starcun to third base, but two more groundout silenced the Jackets.

Once more AIC had chances to get another runner to score in the seventh inning. With one out, Eugene Quirk sent a screaming double down the left field line. Josh Aviles put down a sacrifice bunt to move Quirk over to third. However, nothing materialized, as Seymour grounded out to the pitcher the next at bat, leaving a Yellow Jacket stranded.

Ryan Bruning (1-1) gave it his all for the Yellow Jackets, pitching all eight innings asked of him. Bruning allowed seven hits, four runs and one walk in the contest.

AIC wraps up its spring break trip with a pair of contests against Northeast-10 foes on Friday, March 17. At 11a.m. the Yellow Jackets will face off against Southern Connecticut State University and at 6p.m. against Merrimack College.
