DOBBS FERRY, New York-Freshman attacker
Casey Samuelson scored his first career goal and assist, and senior attacker
John Magliano scored twice, but national No. 10 Mercy College got the best of the American International College men's lacrosse team, winning 18-5 in the host's first game of the year.
AIC's record stands at 0-2 on the campaign.
The Mavericks built an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter before AIC got on the board, as freshman midfielder
Jack Shaughnessy tallied his first collegiate goal at 13:40 of the frame. AIC then cut the deficit to 5-2 early in the second on Magliano's second of the year, a man-up goal at 1:24.
However, the Mavericks rattled off the next nine goals, carrying a run into the third quarter that was broken by Magliano at 7:52 with his third of the year.
Mercy netted two more goals, but AIC countered, with Samuelson popping the twine at 13:26 for his first collegiate goal, and then he set up senior attacker
Kevin Papineau's goal to open the fourth at 1:23, the third of the year for Papineau.
Freshman
Matt Sayegh did everything he could in goal for the Yellow Jackets, notching 18 saves to fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets open Northeast-10 Conference play on Sunday, February 19, when they visit defending national champion Le Moyne, the nation's top team. Opening face-off is scheduled for noon.
