Men's soccer falls short against No. 24 Southern Connecticut

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Despite two penalty-kick goals from sophomore captain Jake Durham and a late surge, the American International College men's soccer team could not hold off national No. 24 Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, October 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • AIC took the initial lead and held a 1-0 lead at the half thanks to a penalty-kick conversion from Durham at 20:12.
  • The Owls tied it up in the 56th minute off a goal from Nicolas Colodrero.
  • A pair of goals - 1:16 apart - from Southern Connecticut's Louis Greenway-Tambini made the score 3-1 in the Owls' favor by the 73rd minute.
  • The Yellow Jackets were awarded another penalty kick in the 84th minute and Durham converted again to bring AIC within 3-2.
  • Despite a late corner-kick opportunity for the Yellow Jackets, they were unable to tie things up late.

BUZZWORTHY:
  • AIC had not been awarded a penalty-kick opportunity during the 2017 season prior to Saturday. The Yellow Jackets had two opportunities during the entire 2016 season, scoring on just one of those chances.
  • Additionally, AIC has not had two penalty kicks in a single game since a contest against Le Moyne on October 16, 2013.
  • Saturday marked Durham's first multi-goal game of the season. He becomes the fourth AIC player this season to have a multi-goal game.

NEXT UP:
  • AIC will travel north to take on Saint Michael's College in NE10 action on Wednesday, October 18. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
