MANCHESTER, New Hampshire- The American International men's basketball team tipped off against St. Anselm on Wednesday, January 18 in Manchester, New Hampshire. The Yellow Jacket ended up falling by a score of 88-80.
Juwan moody led the team with 24 points as he went 6-8 from behind the arc.
Jayvon Pitts-Young added 14 points.
Rasheed Howard had 12 points and six rebounds while
Bruce Spruell netted 12 as well.
The Hawks opened the game with a shot from downtown just seconds into the game. The Yellow Jackets answered by going on a 9-0 run over their next four possessions and almost three minutes. Moody knocked down a contested three at the 15:10 mark to grow the AIC lead to 14-7. The Hawks made it a two point game, 16-14, on a three with almost 12:15 on the clock. On their next possession the Hawks tied the game on a lay-up.
With 10:40 on the clock the Hawks took the lead on a long three, 19-18. That started their 9-0 run and forced coach Andy Burkholder to call a timeout at the 9:34 mark. The run came to an end when
Rasheed Howard nailed the contested layup. The five point deficit did not last long as they Hawks answered with a basket of their own. With a little under eight minutes left in the first, the Hawks made it a 14 point game. Back-to-back-to-back threes by AIC cut that deficit down to five with six and change left.
Justin Daniel kept the Yellow Jacket run going as he drove right and laid one in with the right hand.
At the half, the Hawks had the 44-35 lead.
The Yellow Jackets started the second half with back-to-back baskets to make it a five point game. After the Hawks grew their lead to seven, a three by Pitts-Young made it a four point game two minutes into the half. Every time the Jackets cut it back within a handful, the Hawks found ways to extend their lead.
With 15:51 on the clock the Hawks made it a seven point game with a free throw, 55-48. Spruell was able to cut the Hawks lead down to a single possession with 14 left to play. Just like they had all game, The Hawks made it a seven point game just over a minute later.
The Hawks' lead proved to be too much for the Yellow Jackets down the stretch as they fell by a score of 88-80.
