MANCHESTER, N.H.--American International College Women's Soccer opens Northeast-10 Conference play as they pay a visit to the Queen City and the Southern New Hampshire Penmen.
LAST TIME OUT:Sophomore midfielder
Taylor Kue scored the only goal of the contest on a rebound off of the crossbar as
AIC downed Mercy 1-0 for their first win of the season on September 8. Sophomore goalkeepers
Madison Brown and
Mikayla Demanche each played half the contest, with Brown making two saves in the first half and earning the win and Demanche turning aside one shot in her collegiate soccer debut. The match featured four yellow cards, two per side, as the heat and tight defensive styles of both squads led to frustration.
Southern New Hampshire upended nationally-ranked Saint Rose in their last outing,
taking a 3-2 overtime win in Albanyon September 10. The Golden Knights struck early, taking a 1-0 lead on a header in the eighth minute, and the score remained that at the half as Saint Rose held a 5-3 shot advantage. In the second frame, however, the Penmen turned the game on its head, drawing a penalty kick in the fiftieth minute that Devyn Jacobs fired home, and then she scored again under two minutes later on a pass across the box from Miranda Peloquin. Saint Rose, despite being outshot 11-2 in the period, managed to equalize in the sixty-ninth minute, setting the stage for overtime. In the ninety-fifth minute, SNHU ended the contest, as Miranda Peloquin hit the net with a mid-range shot to elevate the Penmen to 3-1 on the year..
LAST TIME THEY MET:The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break, but surrendered three second-frame goals and dropped a 3-1 decision against SNHU in Springfield on September 16, 2015.
Alyssa Werbicki '16 netted the opening tally in the twenty-fifth minute, with an assist by sophomore midfielder
Federica Frew. Both teams put six shot attempts toward the cage in the first forty-five. The second half went differently; though SNHU's shot edge was just 10-7, they struck the twine three times, as Trisha Luis equalized the score in the fifty-second minute, then put her team on top in the sixty-third. The Penmen added a third goal in the seventy-fifth minute as well. AIC had chances later, including a shot by Frew that hit the crossbar. Autumn Scanlon made six stops in the win, while
Rachel Edgin '16 stopped four in the defeat.
ROAD FIELD ADVANTAGE:Since 2010, the home team in games between SNHU and AIC is just 1-4-1. The lone victory for the home side came in 2013 when the Yellow Jackets took down the Penmen 4-0 at the MassMutual Soccer Field as part of their journey to the Final Four. The draw was also in a game played at AIC; the Yellow Jackets have not lost at SNHU in the last decade.
HOMECOMING COMES EARLY: For senior forward
Serena Shuter, the match will feel more like a home game than any other game outside of Springfield could; she is a native of Manchester and a graduate of Manchester Central High School.
NEXT UP:AIC will play their first home contest of the season on Saturday, September 17 as the New Haven Chargers pay a visit to Abdow Field with a 5:00 p.m. start time.
