The American International College women's soccer team prepares to battle the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Abdow Field.
LAST TIME OUT:The Yellow Jackets opened conference play with
a 1-0 win at Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday. Midway through the first half, AIC generated a free kick on a foul about thirty yards from the goal. Sophomore midfielder
Johanna Englund took the kick, and blasted it past a wall of defenders and then the goalkeeper on the left side of the cage for a 1-0 lead on her second of the year. The goal, at 22:36, was the only tally of the game. AIC defended very well throughout the contest, holding the Penmen to just three shots in the first half and one in the second. Sophomore
Madison Brown earned her first career shutout in the contest.
New Haven suffered their first setback of the season,
a 2-1 loss to Adelphi on Wednesday. The teams had the pace of play nearly even through the first half hour when the Panthers erupted for a pair of goals in a span of 1:05, scoring on a passing play through the left side from forward Morgan Santoro at 30:33, then again at 31:38 on a goal-mouth scramble that fellow forward Laura Gomez was able to put home. The Chargers did get one back in the second half, as back Carlie Schecht was able to head home a corner kick at 75:49, but New Haven could not find the equalizer.
LAST TIME THEY MET:For 75 minutes, the Yellow Jackets and Chargers engaged in a defensive struggle before AIC exploded for three goals in 3:03 to take
a 3-0 win at then-number 25 New Haven on September 19, 2015. Senior midfielder
Jessica Margaretta had one of the three tallies, while junior forward
Linnea Herbertsson and sophomore midfielder
Johanna Nilsson each had an assist in the outburst.
ZERO HOUR:AIC has not conceded a goal in 204:05 of play, with the team's last goal against coming against LIU Post. Brown has played 159:05 of that time, while fellow sophomore
Mikayla Demanche kept the sheet clean for the 45:00 of time she was between the goalposts.
HOME OPENER:From 2007 through 2013, the Yellow Jackets won every home opener they played. However, in the last two years, they tied Saint Anselm and lost to SNHU in the first game at Abdow Field.
NEXT UP:AIC's two-game homestand concludes Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. playoff rematch against Assumption for the team's third Northeast-10 contest.
