SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International College men's lacrosse team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference home game at Abdow Field to Bentley University Friday night, 12-2.
With the loss AIC falls to 0-12 overall and 0-9 in league action, while with the win Bentley moves to 5-2 and 4-1 in the NE-10.
AIC was shutout in the opening half, but played well on the defensive end in the early going. The Jackets, led by senior Josh Gagnon (Holyoke, Mass.), held the Falcons to just two goals in the opening 14 minutes of play, but a last minute scoring strike from Sam Hurley gave Bentley a 3-0 lead after one frame.
Bentley opened the second stanza with two goals in the first 5:02 of play, but AIC tightened up once again, holding the Falcons scoreless for 8:14 before Matt Brigham made it 6-0 late in the half.
AIC junior Kevin Papineau (Westfield, Mass.) made a great move in the final 35 seconds of play, racing to the cage and firing it past Bentley goalie Daniel Shaughnessy, but the goal was waived off due to a crease violation. In the confusion, the Falcons soared down the field and quickly chipped in their seventh goal using just nine seconds of game clock.
Bentley added another just seven seconds later to take a commanding 8-0 lead into the break and deflating the Jackets late.
Gagnon led a great defensive effort in the third, taking away the wrap around goals from behind the cage on numerous possessions. AIC held Bentley to just two goals in the period.
The Jackets got a surprising offensive spark from freshman defenseman Hunter Cooney (Rochester, Mass.) late in the third. Cooney caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball around midfield and found his way 10 yards from the cage. Cooney rifled off a shot over the shoulder of the Falcon goalie for AIC's first goal of the game, 10-1.
The Falcons added two open the fourth, but Jacket junior attacker and goalie John Magliano (Upton, Mass.) struck for his sixth of the year to end the scoring with 3:15 left in regulation.
Magliano made nine saves in net and was spelled by freshman netminder Tariq Qureshi (Elmont, N.Y.) who made two stops in nearly 10 minutes of work between the pipes.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Tuesday, April 12 when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University for a Northeast-10 showdown. Game time with the Penmen is slated to start at 7 p.m. from Manchester, N.H.
