SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Freshman Brendan Carter (Merrimack, N.H.) secured three hits from the lead-off spot, but it was not enough as American International College dropped a, 7-5, decision to Post University in non-conference baseball action this afternoon from Bedard Field.
AIC falls to 8-28 overall with the loss while the Eagles improve to 11-24 with the victory.
After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Jackets answered in the bottom half as junior K. J. White (Wilbraham, Mass.) collected a two-out RBI single through the left side to score Carter, who had singled to open the inning, for the 1-1 score.
Post registered an unearned run in the second to regain the lead, but again it was AIC striking with two outs in the bottom half as Carter ripped a single through the right side to bring home sophomore Eugene Quirk (Matawan, N.J.), who worked a walk two batters earlier, for the 2-2 tie once again.
The Eagles once again soared ahead after plating five runs in the top of the third before AIC began chipping away in the bottom of the fourth as Quirk laced an RBI single down the left field line for the 7-3 deficit.
The Jackets got two more back in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch as senior Karl Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) trotted home from third and a heads up base-running play by sophomore Alex LaFayette (Ludlow, Mass.) allowed him to score all the way from second base for the 7-5 score, but that was as close as they'd get as the Eagle bullpen closed the door.
Senior Brian Karp (Bellmore, N.Y.) was dealt the loss falling to 2-3 on the year after allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts over the first 3.1 innings. The bullpen was excellent without allowing a single run over the final 5.2 innings including a great outing for senior Harrison Paige (Springfield, Mass.) who was excellent hurling 3.2 scoreless innings scattering four hits while striking out one.
Post outhit the hosts 14-8 on the day.
AIC heads back out for a crucial NE-10 Southwest Divisional series this weekend at Le Moyne this weekend playing a single game on Saturday before a twin-bill on Sunday.
