Geffert Guns Down Tying Run at the Plate in the 9th as Baseball Defeats Le Moyne, 6-5

SYRACUSE, N.Y. Senior Karl Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a solo-homer to help lift American International College past Le Moyne, 6-5, in Northeast-10 Southwest Division action this afternoon from Rockwell Field.

With the victory AIC moves to 9-28 on the year and 3-6 in divisional action while the Dolphins fall to 20-13 overall and 3-5 in the NE-10 Southwest Division.

AIC opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first on an RBI ground-out by junior Chris Starcun (Easthampton, Mass.) and after Le Moyne tied things in the bottom of the second it was the Jackets who regained the lead in the top of the fourth as junior K.J. White (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored on a throwing error by the pitcher for the 2-1 lead.

The Yellow Jackets expanded that lead in the top of the fifth as senior Tyler Geffert (Hopedale, Mass.) ripped a two-run single down the left field line for the 4-2 margin.

A solo-homer by the hosts in the bottom half of the frame made things a two-run game, but Kapinos responded in the top of the sixth with a solo-homer of his own for the 5-2 lead.

Le Moyne got one back in the bottom of the seventh, but again AIC kept pace with a run in the eighth as Starcun crossed home on a passed ball for the 6-3 lead.

However, the Dolphins would not go away quietly as they scored a pair in the bottom of the ninth and Geffert gunned down the tying run at the plate to end the game as senior Harrison Paige (Springfield, Mass.) was able to get out of the jam and pick up the save.

Sophomore southpaw Nick Kennedy (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up the win after tossing six innings allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 4-3 on the season while Paige earns his first save after hurling the final three innings out of the bullpen.

Le Moyne outslugged the Jackets 13-6 for the game, but left 14 runners on base.

Both squads return to the diamond tomorrow to wrap up the series with a twin-bill starting at high noon.
