SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Senior Tyler Geffert (Hopedale, Mass.) collected a pair of hits including a monster three-run homer, but it was not enough as a three run ninth inning propelled The College of Saint Rose past American International College, 9-6, in Northeast-10 Southwest Division action this evening from Bedard Field.
AIC falls to 6-26 on the year and 0-5 in divisional action with the loss while the Golden Knights improve to 9-10 overall and 2-0 in NE-10 Southwest play.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth senior Brett Bohl (Ludlow, Mass.) had a tremendous nine pitch at-bat and laced an RBI triple over the right fielder's head to score junior K.J. White (Wilbraham, Mass.). Bohl then touched home as sophomore Reed Phillips (Longmeadow, Mass.) singled up the middle for the 2-2 tie.
Saint Rose came right back, however, in the top of the fifth scoring three times on a double by senior Nick Venier (Kings Park, N.Y.) and a two-run double from junior Alex Chandler (Greenfield Center, N.Y.) for the 5-2 advantage.
The back-and-forth middle portion of the game continued in the bottom half of the frame as Geffert stepped to the plate with two runners on and wasted little time as he deposited the first pitch he saw high and far to left for his fifth homer of the year and 5-5 tie once again.
The teams traded single runs in the seventh as senior Derek Reed (Lowell, Mass.) led off the top half with a solo homer and junior Chris Starcun (Easthampton, Mass.) singled up the middle to drive home Geffert for the 6-6 score.
However, in the top of the ninth inning the Golden Knights plated three runs to secure the 9-6 victory.
Freshman Thomas Chapdelaine (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) was dealt the loss after tossing two plus innings allowing one run on three hits with two walks to fall to 0-2 on the year.
Bohl joined Geffert with multiple hits going 2-for-4 as AIC was outhit 15-9 for the game.
The Jackets take to the road this weekend for a three game set against Adelphi University with a double-header on Saturday and single contest on Sunday.
