GARDEN CITY, N.Y. Senior Tyler Geffert (Hopedale, Mass.) extended his hit-streak to 10-games while going 5-for-9 as American International College took game one, 4-2, before falling, 5-4, to Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 Southwest Division twin-bill this afternoon from Bonomo Field.
The Jackets move to 7-27 on the year and 1-6 in divisional play while the Panthers improve to 17-16 overall and 5-3 in the NE-10 southwest.
Trailing 1-0 in game one, the Jackets tied the game in the top of the third as Geffert singled through the left side to score classmate Eddie Ritch (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) who reached on a single earlier in the frame for the 1-1 score.
AIC pushed ahead in the top of the fifth as Geffert again singled through the left side to score sophomore Eugene Quirk (Matawan, N.J.) for the 2-1 edge before a wild pitch in the top of the sixth once again tied the game.
Geffert then collected his third single of the game in the top of the seventh and later crossed home on a run-producing base-knock to right field by junior K. J. White (Wilbraham, Mass.) before ripping an RBI double in the ninth to score an insurance run for the 4-2 victory.
Sophomore south-paw Nick Kennedy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) earned the decision to improve to 3-3 after allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts over the first six innings of play. Senior Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) earned his second save of the season after tossing three scoreless innings of relief and leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.
Geffert went 4-for-5 at the dish while freshman Brendan Carter (Merrimack, N.H.) added a pair of hits as AIC outhit the hosts 11-5 the opener.
Coyne started game-two behind the dish and got the Jackets on the board first as he extended his hit streak to eight games with an RBI double in the second for the 1-0 lead. Geffert continued to swing a hot bat as he extended his hitting-streak to 10 games with an infield single in third and Ritch crossed home on a throwing error before Geffert trotted home on a double to left center by junior Chris Starcun (Easthampton, Mass.) for the 3-0 margin.
The Panthers got on the board in the seventh with a two-spot before senior Karl Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) doubled in a run in the eighth for the 4-2 lead.
Adelphi then rallied in the ninth scoring three times on a ground-out a double and a single to walk-off with the 5-4 victory and secure the split.
Senior Colin Sledzik (Higganum, Conn.) absorbed the loss after tossing the complete game surrendering all five runs on 12 hits to fall to 1-4 on the season.
Kapinos, Coyne and Ritch each collected a pair of hits in game two as the Panthers held the slim 12-11 edge in hits.
Both teams conclude their season series with a single contest tomorrow at high-noon.
