BROOKVILLE, N.Y. Junior Chris Starcun (Easthampton, Mass.) turned in a 2-for-4 performance with a homer while scoring a pair of runs to help pace American International College to a, 7-2, victory over LIU-Post in non-conference baseball action this afternoon.
AIC (4-8) started early as they have so often this season by grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Alex LaFayette (Ludlow, Mass.) drove in a run with a groundout before senior Karl Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) knocked home another with a single to left.
The Pioneers (6-8) answered with a pair in the bottom half on a pair of run-producing singles for the 2-2 tie before the Jackets took the lead for good in the top of the second as sophomore Eugene Quirk (Matawan, N.J.) crossed home on a throwing error by the catcher after swiping third for the 3-2 edge.
Starcun then opened the third with his second round-tripper of the year with a opposite field jack for the 4-2 margin.
Clinging to the two-run lead AIC added insurance by putting up a three-spot in the ninth on a two-run double to left by senior Tyler Geffert (Hopedale, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by freshman Josh Aviles (Naugatuck, Conn.) for the 7-2 final as senior Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) tossed a scoreless ninth to close the door.
Sophomore Nick Kennedy (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up his second consecutive win after hurling the first eight innings allowing just the two runs pair scattering six hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts to improve to 2-1.
Junior Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) was dealt the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk over the first four innings of play falling to 1-3 on the season.
LaFayette and senior Eddie Ritch (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) joined Starcun with multiple hits as the Jackets outhit the hosts 11-6 on the afternoon.
AIC will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Merrimack tomorrow afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. first-pitch.
