Baseball Falls in NE-10 Opener to Merrimack, 6-2

HAVERHILL, Mass. The American International College baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision to Merrimack College in Northeast-10 action this afternoon from Trinity Stadium.

AIC falls to 4-9 on the year and 0-1 in conference play while Merrimack improves to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as junior Tyler Lyne (Agawam, Mass.) knocked in a run with a single to center for the 1-0 edge.

Merrimack added to their lead in the bottom half of the fifth scoring a trio of runs. Freshman Matthew Ronai (Orange, Conn.) ripped an RBI double and junior Cam DiSarcina (Shirley, Mass.) followed with a run-producing base-knock to left before Ronai crossed home on a balk for the 4-0 margin.

The Jackets, who were held hitless until the top of the seventh, responded by loading the bases with no outs off a pair of singles from senior Tyler Geffert (Hopedale, Mass.) and junior Chris Starcun (Easthampton, Mass.) and a hit batsman.

Sophomore Alex LaFayette (Ludlow, Mass.) followed by grounding into a double-play, but senior Brett Bohl (Ludlow, Mass.) crossed home for the first AIC run and Geffert followed shortly after on a passed ball for the 4-2 deficit.

The Warriors came back in the eighth with a little two out rally to plate a pair using a triple, double and single to do the damage for the 6-2 lead. AIC would threaten in the ninth eventually loading the bases on three walks sending the tying run to the plate.

However, junior Nate Spielvogel (Brookline, Mass.) got the final batter looking to record his third save of the season as sophomore Michael Nocera (Bristol, Conn.) secured the victory out of the bullpen tossing five hitless innings striking out eight and allowing eight free passes to improve to 1-0.

Senior Harrison Paige (Springfield, Mass.) was dealt the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year after allowing all four runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out two in six innings of work.

The hosts outhit the visitors 13-4 as the Jackets went just 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position including a 0-for-5 clip with the bases loaded. Merrimack was 6-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

AIC returns to the diamond on Saturday as they travel to Assumption for a twin-bill at high-noon.
