WORCESTER, Mass. Junior Riley Brennan (Wilbraham, Mass.) potted seven goals to help lead American International College past Assumption College, 14-12, in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon from Multi-Sport Stadium.
AIC improves to 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play while the Hounds drop to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in NE-10 tilts.
With the game tied at 10-10 with 23:36 left in the final half, AIC erupted for four straight goals for the second time in the stanza as Brennan bookended the run with junior Jessica Lawler (Mexico, N.Y.) and senior Whitney McKay (Painted Post, N.Y.) sandwiching goals in between for the 14-10 margin with 12:02 left on the clock.
Despite two goals from Assumption junior Alexis Torosian (Hopkinton, Mass.) stood tall in net including stopping a free-position shot with one minute left in the game and AIC ran out the clock for the victory.
Torosian stopped 13 shots to improve to 2-0 on the year while her counterpart, junior Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass.) also collected 13 saves to fall to 0-1 in the Hounds opener.
AIC outshot the hosts 38-30 including a 27-25 clip on target while controlling 17 draws. Assumption left some goals on the table as they converted just 1-of-10 free-position shots while the visitors went 3-for-8
The Greyhounds grabbed the early lead with a quick goal in the first minute before the Jackets took it right back at 2-1 after back-to-back scores from Brennan and freshman Mary Bates (East Longmeadow, Mass.) at 3:44 and 7:12, respectively.
Assumption raced back with four unanswered scores including a pair by senior Julianna Molloy (Guilford, Conn.) on back-to-back possessions for the 5-2 lead midway through the opening half.
AIC then scored three of the next four goals including a pair by Brennan to cut the deficit to a single goal at 6-5 with 8:26 left on the clock, but Hound sophomore Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass.) scored a pair of quick goals just over a minute apart and despite a late tally by Bates the visitors went into the intermission trailing 8-6.
The Jackets came out of the break clicking on all cylinders as it was Brennan leading the charge during a 4-0 spurt as she scored a pair of goals while junior Stefanie Dufresne (Belchertown, Mass.) fired one home and led to another score with a long dash up the middle finding classmate Jessica Lawler on the left of the cage for the low finish and 10-8 edge just 5:31 into the second half.
The Jackets return to action on Friday as they travel to Molloy for a 6 p.m. affair.
