WILMINGTON, Delaware- The American International College men's basketball teamed played their second game in 24 hours as they traveled to Goldey-Beacom in a Sunday afternoon match-up. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to the early lead, but the Lightning struck and took the game 79-73.
In the first five minutes, the two team combined for ten points, eight of which went in the Yellow Jacket's favor. A
Bruce Spruell layup with 13:42 on the clock gave the Yellow Jackets the 15-7 lead. It took over two minutes of play for either team to change their score, but it was the Lighting who broke the spell with a layup at the 11:29 mark. Over the last nine and a half minutes, the Lighting went on a 30-9 run to end the half and take the 39-24 lead.
There was just under 14 minutes left in the game with the score favoring the Lighting 50-33 when the Yellow Jackets started to make their run. Kaba Kassim knocked down a triple, but the Lightning answered with a three of their own on their next possession. Kassim would matched the answer with another three eight seconds later. After an empty Lighting possession,
Jayvon Pitts-Young missed a deep ball but was fouled and headed to the line. He knocked down all three to make it an 11 point game, 53-42.
With 11:26 on the clock the Lighting held a 12-point lead, but the Kaba was feeling his shot from downtown and knocked down another three to make it a 55-46 game. Pitts-Young was at the stripe to shoot two at the 3:11 mark and made it a six point game, 65-59. On their next possession, Swan found himself where Pitts-Young was and replicated the outcome to cut the Lighting's lead down to 65-61.
There were 93 seconds left in the game when Pitts-Young hit a jumper to make it a four-point deficit, 69-65. Each team then gave up layups as they entered the last 45 seconds of play. The Yellow Jackets kept the game within three points until the 15 second mark. It was at that time that AIC tried to extend the game, but the Lighting knocked down their free throws to take the game by a score of 79-73.
Justin Daniel had a career high 18 points in the game while shooting 75% from the field. Pitts-Young had 15 points in 36 minutes of play, including a 2-3 day form behind the arc. Swan was two rebounds away from another double-double as he recorded 14 points and eight rebounds. Rounding out the double digit scorers for the Yellow Jackets was Spruell who had 11 points and was 4-of-6 from the field.
The Yellow Jackets hit the hardwood again on Wednesday, November 30 when they travel to Pace for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 tip.
