The American International College women's soccer team hosts the Southern Connecticut State University Owls in a Friday night showdown.

LAST TIME OUT: The Yellow Jackets suffered their first conference setback of the season, a 1-0 overtime loss at Saint Michael's. Despite a 19-7 shot attempt edge, AIC could not find the net, and Saint Michael's took advantage of a free kick outside the top of the box early in the extra session, with Michaela Horne firing the shot into the upper right corner of the goal to end the game.

Southern Connecticut found a way to equalize late, playing national number 12 Adelphi to a 1-1 draw on Long Island. The Owls actually outshot Adelphi 6-0 in the first half, but could not capitalize on their chances, and Adelphi scored the opening goal of the game twenty minutes into the second half. The Panthers had a strong second half push and looked like they would hold on to win. However, late in the half, on a corner kick, forward Caroline Staudle managed to beat the defense, heading home a ball with under two minutes left to force overtime, where stout defense kept any further scoring from occurring.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Sophomore forward Federica Frew hit the target in overtime to give AIC a 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut on October 9, 2015. After a scoreless ninety minutes of regulation, AIC drew a foul in overtime. Romina Bell '16 took the free kick, and powered it into the eighteen-yard box, where Frew was able to head it home for the game-winning tally in the ninety-fifth minute. The win came despite Southern's 7-6 shots-on-goal advantage in the game, as Rachel Edgin '16 posted a seven-save shutout.

WIN AND GET IN?: Officially, the Yellow Jackets cannot clinch a berth in the Northeast-10 Championship Tournament tonight, no matter the result. However, a victory would give AIC 21 standings points, which has nearly always been sufficient to make the playoffs. The last team to miss the Tournament with 21 standings points was the 2011 New Haven Chargers, who finished ninth with a 7-8-0 record; no team has missed the postseason with 21 points since the conference started playing a 14-game regular season.

FREW FOR THE W: Only a sophomore, Federica Frew can make the case for being one of the most clutch players in AIC soccer history. She has nine goals to her credit in her career, and seven of them have been game-winning tallies.

NEXT UP: The Yellow Jackets square off with the number four Stonehill Skyhawks in a battle for first place in the Northeast-10 on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Abdow Field.
