Yellow Jackets Sting Owls

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts- The American International College volleyball team hosted the Owls of Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday, October 25. Despite a cold start in the first set, the Yellow Jackets took the match 3-1.

The Owls started the game on a 13-6 run, taking advantage of eight Yellow Jacket errors. The Yellow Jackets went on a run to make it a two-point game, 15-13, forcing the Owls to call a timeout. Coming out of the huddle, they Yellow Jacks tied the match at 19 and forced another Owl timeout. A 6-1 run by the Yellow Jackets gave them the 25-20 first set win.

Just like the first set, the second was full of runs. The Yellow Jackets started the game a 3-0 run, but the Owls rallied off seven points on multiple Yellow Jacket mistakes. With the 12-9 lead, the Owls put four straight points on the board to give them a seven-point lead. The Yellow Jackets went on their own 5-0 run to cut their deficit to two, 16-14. After two Owl points, a Diva Rivas-Reyes kill started a 5-0 to take the 19-18 lead. But the Owls would not be caged, as they rattled off five straight to take the 23-19 lead. Owls took set two by a score of 25-23.

Up 5-3 in the third set, the Yellow Jackets took full momentum of the set as they went on a 13-5 run to pull ahead of the Owls. The Yellow Jackets pushed the Owls' backs to the wall as they took the 2-1 set lead, 25-15.

The score was four all in the fourth set when the Yellow Jackets pumped out six points and took the 8-4 lead, and never looked back. They took the set 25-19 and the match.

Diva Rivas-Reyes led the Yellow Jackets with 18 kills. Jana Potic and Annie Boele each had 11 kills. Boele also recorded 14 digs. Mercy Rivera led the team with 29 digs, and Dolores Kopren had 47 assist with only one set error.

The Yellow Jackets hit the road for two starting Saturday October 29 at St. Michael's, followed by New Haven on November 1.
