Men's soccer prepares to face top-ranked Adelphi

The American International College men's soccer team returns home for its final two games of the 2016 regular season, with a matchup first slated against Adelphi University for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25 at Ronald J. Abdow Field.

Following a 0-0 draw in difficult weather against Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, on Saturday, AIC moved to a 7-7-1 record on the season with a 5-5-1 conference mark, and sits at seventh place in the Northeast-10 standings. The top eight teams in the conference will advance to the postseason tournament.

"With two great wins and a very good tie against Le Moyne in difficult conditions we are in a strong position to make playoffs," said AIC head coach Luke Perry. "Looking at the math, we need to get at least one win and hope some other results go our way. If we can get a result in both games, it will be a great week for us heading into the conference tournament."

Adelphi will prove a tough, balanced test for the Yellow Jackets. The Panthers sit atop the conference with a 12-1-1 overall record and are 10-0-1 in conference play.

On offense, Adelphi is led by Caelan Hueber, who has 23 points on the season, including 10 goals. James Thristino has 20 points for the Panthers on the year. Adelphi is tied with Southern New Hampshire with a total of 31 goals this season, most among all teams in the conference. Defensively, Adelphi has allowed a total of just seven goals all season to opponents, with goakeeper Spenser Powell's .857 save percentage ranking as the best in the Northeast-10.

Despite Adelphi's strength, the Yellow Jackets are focused on returning to the postseason, with only Tuesday's game and a Friday matchup between Bentley University left. The Yellow Jackets are in the midst of their longest unbeaten streak of the season at three games.

"It is important for us to not lose focus now and to continue performing well over the final two games," Perry said.
