The American International College field hockey team faces another stern test as they pay a visit to national number five Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown.
LAST TIME OUT: AIC
dropped a 3-1 decision against Saint Anselm despite a strong second half push. The Hawks scored twice in the first frame, taking the lead into halftime, but AIC came out firing and brought the score to 2-1 on a play from
Payton Montague to
Taylor Ruscillo, who beat the keeper in the forty-first minute for her fifth of the year. That was as close as AIC could get the score, as the Hawks shut the door after that, scoring in the final minute on a corner for the 3-1 final.
Stonehill saw a hat trick from Kacie Smith and used a four-goal second half
to demolish Southern Connecticut 5-0. Smith opened the scoring in the twenty-first minute for the Skyhawks, and then contributed a pair of tallies in the second half. Alexandra Gerew also hit the net and added an assist for her team, while goalkeeper Sarah Freedman made six stops in a shutout win.
LAST TIME THEY MET: Emma Heroth scored twice and
Taylor Ross made a career-best nineteen saves,
but Stonehill topped AIC 5-3 in a match on October 21, 2015. Heroth opened the scoring in the twelfth minute with a rush up the right side to put AIC ahead 1-0. However, Stonehill responded quickly, scoring in the fourteenth and eighteenth minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Heroth had an answer of her own, potting her second of the game in the twenty-second minute to level the score heading into the half. After the Skyhawks took a lead on a penalty stroke, AIC answered again to make it 3-3 with twenty to play, only to see Stonehill net the last two goals of the contest for the 5-3 win.
SAVING GRACE: No player in Division II has more defensive saves than
Chelsea Davis. The rookie has turned aside six chances behind the goalkeeper to lead the conference and country. The last time an AIC player led the nation at the end of the year in that statistic was Katrina Heterbring '11, who had 11 defensive saves in 2009.
GOALS, GOALS, GOALS: Stonehill's Kacie Smith leads the nation in goal scoring. She has 19 tallies in 13 games, for an average of 1.46 goals per game. The next closest player, West Chester's Rachel Toppi, has 16 goals, but in 15 games played.
NEXT UP: The Yellow Jackets host senior day and the LIU Post Pioneers for a noontime start this Saturday.
