The American International College women's soccer team seeks their sixth straight conference victory when they pay a visit to the Merrimack Warriors.
LAST TIME OUT: AIC had their best offensive game of the year, pouring in three goals in the second half
to down Le Moyne 4-1. Freshman forward
Isabella Burns opened the scoring in the first half just 7:07 in a frame that AIC dominated offensively, outshooting the Dolphins 11-0. Le Moyne managed an early second half equalizer, but then AIC's attack turned up the heat, with sophomore forward
Federica Frew and junior midfielders
Johanna Nilsson and
Linnea Herbertsson all tallying goals in a 7:29 span for the win.
Merrimack
suffered a 7-1 defeat at the hands of national number 12 Adelphi in their most recent contest. Panthers Morgan Santoro and Victoria Antonino each tallied two goals and an assist in the contest for Adelphi. Merrimack's lone goal came midway through the second half, with Jorgi Adee tallying her first of the year on a pass across the box from Victoria Carter. Merrimack was outshot 28-9 in the game.
LAST TIME THEY MET: Frew was the hero in overtime
as AIC upended Merrimack 2-1 on October 3, 2015 at Abdow Field. The Warriors struck first in the game just seven minutes in, but
Romina Bell '16 had an answer under four minutes later, blasting a free kick home to equalize the score. That would be it for goals in regulation despite glorious chances for both teams, and both sides would also have goals called back for being offsides. Late in the first extra session, however, Frew beat a defender and fired a shot high to end the game and earn her team three standings points.
SCORING DEPTH: Merrimack has thirteen goals in their six games, and ten different goal scorers. Only two players, Carter and Giacalone, have multiple goals for Merrimack. Comparatively, AIC has seven different players with goals so far.
WINNER WINNER: Frew has three game-winning tallies on the season, tied for fourth in the nation. Three players from various colleges around the country have four decisive tallies for their teams to lead the national rankings.
NEXT UP: The Yellow Jackets head north to take on Saint Michael's College in a 3:00 p.m. contest on Tuesday, October 4.
