WORCESTER, Mass. American International College junior transfer Natalija Dordevic (Belgrade, Serbia) notched 21 kills in her debut as volleyball downed Assumption in non-conference action Friday night at the Greyhound Tournament, 3-1.
With the win the Yellow Jackets open the season 1-0, while Assumption opens 2015 0-1. After dropping the first set, 23-25, AIC took the final three sets; 25-16, 25-20, 25-13.
Dordevic hit .362 for the match, tallying just four errors. Sophomore Amanda Encinas (Whittier, Calif.) set a new career high with 42 assists (10.5 per set), 17 higher than her mark at Southern Connecticut late last season. Sophomore Annie Boele (Clovis, Calif.) also notched double digit kills (12) while hitting .258.
AIC clawed back in the first set, scoring four straight points led by two senior Bailey Swan (Belvidere, Ill.) kills, bringing the Jackets within one, 23-22. Dordevic tallied a kill to make it 24-23 Hounds, but an AIC error clinched the first set for Assumption.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the final three sets, limiting Assumption to six, seven and six kills. AIC hit .284 as a team with only 15 errors to the Hounds 24.
American International returns to the Greyhound Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Sep. 5 to face Nyack at 12 p.m. and Bloomfield at 2 p.m.
