SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International College volleyball team dropped a Northeast-10 match at home to Le Moyne Tuesday night, 3-0.
The Yellow Jackets battled in the opening set, but ultimately fell, 22-25. The Dolphins then went to pick off AIC, 11-25 and 20-25 for the sweep. With the loss AIC falls to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while with the win Le Moyne improves to 11-3 and 2-1 in NE-10 matches.
AIC recovered from an early 4-0 in the opening set with a kill by junior Lauren Pires (Dartmouth, Mass.). The Jackets later used three straight points, including a service ace by freshman Roxana Wenger (Giph-Oberfrick, Switzerland), to pull within two, 6-4 in the early going.
American International did not let the Dolphins get too far ahead after that and even knotted up the score at 20 following three Le Moyne errors. The Dolphins closed out, however, using Yellow Jacket errors and a kill by Andrea Buchanon to go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second, AIC had Le Moyne within one, 8-7, but Kendall Corcoran stepped up to serve and dished out nine straight points including three service aces. AIC sophomore Annie Boele (Clovis, Calif.) ended the streak with a kill set up by Wenger, but the damage was done and Le Moyne took a commanding 2-0 lead.
AIC erased a five point deficit midway through the third set to bring it within one at 20-19, made possible by back-to-back Pires kills. Corcoran again got hot with the serve and downed the Jackets for a second straight set in the end.
Pires and junior outside hitter Natalija Dordevic (Belgrade, Serbia) paced AIC with eight kills apiece while Wenger dished 26 assists.
AIC next returns to action Saturday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Saint Anselm for a Northeast-10 tilt with the Hawks. Wake up with some Yellow Jacket volleyball as first serve is slated for 11 a.m. from Manchester, N.H.
