Volleyball Rallies In Five-Setter At Saint Anselm, 3-2

MANCHESTER, N.H. The American International College volleyball team outlasted Saint Anselm in a five set match Saturday morning, a Northeast-10 road win for the Yellow Jackets.

With the win, AIC moves to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in NE-10 matches this season, while with the loss St. Anselm falls to 6-6 and 2-1 in league play.

The Yellow Jackets opened the match with a win in set one, 25-14, but fell the next two 24-26, 19-25, before closing out the Hawks 28-26 and 15-11.

AIC opened the match with six straight points with freshman Diva Rivas-Reyes (Tucson, Ariz.) serving it up. Rivas had a service ace to kick it off with kills by junior outside Natalija Dordevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Roxana Wenger (Giph-Oberfrick, Switzerland) mixed in there. The Yellow Jackets finished the set off with four straight points started with a Dordevic kill.

In the second set, AIC undid a 22 all knotted score with an assisted block from junior Lauren Pires (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Rivas and a kill by Dordevic to make it 24-22 AIC, but the Hawks responded with four straight points to knot the match at 1-1.

On the verge of a match loss, down 24-25, the Jackets battled to knot it at 26 apiece before Rivas and sophomore Mercy Rivera (Canovanas, P.R.) made kills to force a deciding fifth set.

In the final set of the day down four early, junior Caitlin Sobolewski (Guilford, Conn.) started an American International go-ahead rally with a kill set up by Wenger. The two traded points until both squads had 10 apiece, but AIC finished with five of the final six points to complete the rally.

Rivas finished with a team-high 16 kills, while Wenger notched 42 assists. Rivera registered 33 digs in the winning effort.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Tuesday, Oct. 6 in NE-10 action at Saint Rose. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
