ALBANY, N.Y. American International College freshman Diva Rivas-Reyes (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded a career-high 17 kills, but volleyball dropped a Northeast-10 four-setter at Saint Rose Tuesday night.
With the loss AIC falls to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in conference matches, while with the win the Golden Knights improve to 5-7 and 2-2 in the NE-10. The Yellow Jackets won the first set, 25-19, but fell in straight sets from there; 19-25, 25-27 and 23-25.
AIC erased an early six point deficit (8-2) in the first set, knotting the score up at 12 apiece with a kill by junior outside hitter Natalija Dordevic (Belgrade, Serbia). Dordevic's two kills, a junior Lauren Pires (Dartmouth, Mass.) kill and a Golden Knight attack error gave the Yellow Jackets the lead midway through the opening frame.
The two traded points throughout the rest of the set, but American International registered the final three points, ending the set victory with a block by Pires and Dordevic.
In the second set, Rivas-Reyes knotted the score at 18 apiece with a kill from Roxana Wenger (Giph-Oberfrick, Switzerland), but St. Rose went on a roll with Sam Atchison, scoring six of the final seven points including firing off two service aces to tie the match at one set each.
Down 22-24 in the third, AIC rallied with three straight Dordevic kills to take the slim one point edge, but once again St. Rose held tough and move on with a lead heading into the fourth frame.
Holding true to how the match had played out thus far, the fourth set was another battle and saw another Golden Knight win. St. Rose's Maryellen Devic gave AIC their 23rd point to bring it within one (23-24), but made up for her mistake with a match winning kill.
Dordevic finished with 11 kills, while sophomore libero Mercy Rivera (Canovanas, P.R.) recorded 26 digs. Wenger led the team in assists with 36 total.
AIC returns to action next Tuesday, Oct. 13 when Franklin Pierce visits Butova Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
