SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Graduate Student Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y.) stopped nine shots, however, an own goal cost American International College a 1-0 decision to No. 9 nationally ranked Saint Rose this afternoon from MassMutal soccer field.
The Golden Knights improve to 7-0-1 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the Northeast-10 while AIC drops to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Jackets had an early chance to grab the lead as in the 2nd minute senior Meimi Tomochika (Toshimu-ku, Japan) sent a corner-kick into the box that was played down by freshman Federica Frew (Melbourne, Australia), but her bid sailed high and over the crossbar.
Frew again had a chance in the 30th minute off a great set piece by sophomore Linnea Herbertsson (Boras, Sweden), however, her shot from the top of the box just cleared the outside of the left post keeping the game scoreless.
It was Saint Rose who struck just before the half in the 44th minute as in an untraditional fashion freshman Aline Stockli (Berne, Switzerland) sent a harmless cross into the box from the right side that hit off an AIC defender's head in the wrong spot and trickled into the goal for an own goal and the 1-0 lead at the half.
The Jackets came out of the intermission running hard to make-up for that goal as Herbertsson had back-to-back great runs in the first 10 minutes, but one shot was saved and the other sailed high.
Then in the 55th minute senior Alyssa Werbicki (Chicopee, Mass.) settled a through ball down on the right side of the box and her quick bid to pick the far post was met by a diving Golden Knight freshman keeper Madison Taylor (Mississaugua, Ont.) who tipped the ball wide with her right hand to preserve the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Knights then had a great chance for some insurance in the 80th minute as junior Kristin Carr (Tolland, Conn.) played a ball down in the box and shot toward the left post, but Edgin made a diving snare to keep the game in reach for AIC.
Edgin made another great stop sailing high to punch the ball over the cross bar in the 87th minute off a shot by sophomore Morgan Burchhardt (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) from the top left of the box, but it was not enough as the offense couldn't mount a comeback and the final horn sounded.
Saint Rose held the 19-16 edge in shots with 9-4 advantage in shots on target while American International controlled the corner kicks, 5-2.
Edgin falls to 3-4 on the year while Taylor moves to 7-0-1 while collecting her fourth shutout of the season after making four saves.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday as the travel to Le Moyne for a 3 p.m. affair.
