SYRACUSE, N.Y. Senior Alyssa Werbicki (Chicopee, Mass.) potted the lone score as American International College defeated Le Moyne, 1-0, in Northeast-10 women's soccer action this afternoon from Ted Grant Field.
With the win AIC improves to 4-4 on the year and 3-2 in conference action while the Dolphins drop to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the league.
It was freshman Johanna Nilsson (Ulricehamn, Sweden who found Werbicki in the 14 th minute, but the senior's initial bid was stonewalled by Le Moyne senior keeper Tori Corsaro (Liverpool, N.Y.). However, Werbicki did not give up on the play and chased her own rebound and slipped it home from six yard out for the 1-0 edge.
Scoring chances after that were few and far between in the first half as the score remained the same as the teams headed into the locker room.
Le Moyne looked for the equalizer early in the second half as junior Rachel Terry (Vestal, N.Y.) sent one on net that was turned aside by graduate student Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, N.Y.) in the 48th minute to preserve the lead.
AIC nearly doubled their margin in the 62nd minute as Nilsson blasted a shot that was met by Corsaro as the score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
That play resulted in three consecutive corner kicks for the Jackets, but neither of senior Meimi Tomichika's (Toshima-ku, Japan) efforts resulted in shot attempts.
The Jackets again had a chance late in the game to grab some insurance as freshman Rachel Brown (Springfield, Mass.) used some nifty footwork to free herself and then dish to sophomore Linnea Herbertsson (Boras, Sweden), but her bid to pick the left post sailed just wide and out of harm's way in the 86th minute.
Edgin recorded three saves in the victory as she improves to 4-4 on the season while collecting her third shut-out. Corsaro turned aside five shots while falling to 1-7 on the year in the setback.
American International held the slim edge in shots 10-8 as well as shots on target 6-3 and corner kicks 5-2.
AIC returns to action Saturday evening as they host Merrimack on the turf at 8 p.m.
