SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International College volleyball squad dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions to Dowling and Angelo State University in day two of the 2015 International Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational this afternoon at the Butova Gymnasium.
With the losses AIC evens their record to 6-6 on the year.
In the first set of the later match Angelo State jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, but AIC battled back with a pair of kills by junior Natalija Dordevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and classmate Cailtin Sobolewski (Guilford, Conn.) to get it to 10-5.
However, the Rams went on another run making it 20-7 and didn't allow the Jackets to string multiple points together as they cruised to a 25-10 victory in the first set.
American International came out strong in the second set putting ASU on their heels with an early spurt with seven consecutive points to grab a 9-6 lead and force Angelo State to call timeout. Sophomore Annie Boele (Clovis, Calif.) had a pair of kills during that stretch while Dordevic included a service ace.
The Rams got themselves back on the right track eventually working the set to a tie at 12 before taking the lead with six straight points and they closed set two with six straight points for the 25-18 final.
Set three was more of the same as ASU continued to swing strong grabbing a 9-2 lead early. AIC's best run of set three was a three-point streak freshman Roxana Wenger (Giph-Oberfrick, Switzerland) continued her great set pieces rewarding Dordevic and junior Andrea Dillon (Vermilion, Ohio) with kills.
But, again the Rams didn't allow AIC much sustained offense as they cruised to a 25-11 win and a 3-0 match victory.
Dordevic finished the day with 17 total kills to lead AIC while Wegner added 45 total assists in the two matches.Sophomore Mercy Rivera (Canovanas, P.R.) added 27 digs on the day for the Jackets.
