SPRINGFIELD, Mass. American International College senior Alec Cerquiera (Peabody, Mass.) fired off the game-winning shot in the 89th minute as men's soccer won their second straight in dramatic fashion Saturday evening at Abdow Field, 1-0.
With the win AIC improves to 2-1-0, while with the loss NYIT falls to 2-2-0 overall.
Cerqueira corralled a pass and fired off a shot past the keeper for his first of the season. Just three nights ago the Yellow Jackets won in double overtime off an Alejandro Alvarez (Pereira, Colombia) goal following a lengthy weather delay.
Prior to the eventual game-winner, American International had a few great scoring chances. Senior Ed Sharman (Tunbridge Weels, England) had everyone beat on the left post, but a bad angle and his shot went straight across the front of the cage, never making the bend.
AIC sophomore Sam Jepson (Goshen, Conn.) checked into the game in the 78th minute and immediately fired off a deflected Sharman corner kick, but it sailed high of the cage.
Sharman had two of the Jackets five shots on goal. Cerqueira, Alvarez and senior Frazier Cronin (Bromley, England) all had one apiece.
Junior keeper Sebastian Tamayo (Stratford, Conn.) made five saves, while Bear goalie Rico Jonathan made four.
AIC returns to action Tuesday, Sep. 15 in Northeast-10 action at Merrimack. Game is slated to start at 7 p.m. from North Andover, Mass.
