NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. The American International College men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 10 Merrimack in Northeast-10 action this evening from Martone-Mejail Field.
AIC evens their record at 2-2 and fall to 0-1 in conference action with the loss while the Warriors improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10.
The Jackets opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead into the intermission after a goal from senior Alec Cerquiera (Peabody, Mass.) in the 44th minute off a rare double-assist by classmates Ed Sharman (Tunbridge Wells, England) and Jason Burnusuz (Westfield, Mass.).
It would be all Merrimack in the second-half, however, as despite the effort of junior keeper Sebastian Tamayo (Stratford, Conn.), who made three consecutive stops within a five minute span with a tie game, the Warriors took the lead in the 82nd minute on a goal from senior Julio Leon Garcia (Caracas, Venezuela).
Just 39 seconds later they added insurance on a score from junior Jaime Torres (Seville, Spain) and a late PK goal accounted for the final score.
Tamayo stopped nine shots in the loss while Warrior sophomore Lucas Rezende (Weymouth, Mass.) accounted for a pair of saves in the victory.
The hosts outshot the Jackets 21-7 including a 13-3 edge in shots on target while also holding the slim 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
American International returns to action on Saturday evening when they host Saint Anselm at 5 p.m.
