WILMINGTON, Del. Down two sets, the American International College volleyball team battled back, claiming the final three sets to defeat Chestnut Hill at the Wildcat Regional Invitational Friday afternoon, 3-2.
The Yellow Jackets opened the day with a 3-0 loss by the hands of host Wilmington (Del.). With the split, AIC moves to 3-2 overall.
After a dismal start, falling 10-25 and 22-25, the Yellow Jackets battled back in the third 25-22, 25-23 and finished off the Griffins 15-10 to seal the rally.
AIC junior transfer Natalija Dordevic (Belgrade, Serbia) led the charge in the third set, notching seven kills with a single error in 15 attempts. Senior outside hitter Bailey Swan (Belvidere, Ill.) tallied five kills without a hitting error.
Swan recorded six kills in the fourth and finished with 16 while hitting .302 for the match. Dordevic ended with 19 kills. Sophomore setter Amanda Encinas (Whittier, Calif.) set a new career-high with 45 assists. Classmate Mercy Rivera (Canovanas, P.R.) led the squad with 32 digs.
The Yellow Jackets fell in the tourney opener to host Wilmington, 18-25, 19-25 and 18-25. Dordevic tallied a team-high 13 kills, while Encinas notched 19 assists.
Dordevic moves into first in the Northeast-10 with 4.21 kills-per-set and second in kills with 80. Encinas jumped up a spot to fifth, averaging 8.94 assists-per-game.
AIC returns to action tomorrow, Saturday 12 against Holy Family at 10 a.m. and finishes up the Wildcat Invite with Caldwell at 2 p.m.
