Volleyball Battles Back Against Holy Family, Falls to Caldwell at Wildcat Invite

WILMINGTON, Del. The American International College volleyball team split in the final day of the Wildcat Regional Invitational, defeating Holy Family, 3-1, before falling to Caldwell, 1-3 Saturday afternoon.

With the split AIC moves to 4-3 after two weeks of play.

The Yellow Jackets had a chance to sweep Holy Family, but fell late in the third set; 25-19, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-16.

Senior outside hitter Bailey Swan (Belvidere, Ill.) knotted the score at 24 apiece, but the Tigers responded with a kill and an AIC attack error to stretch the match to four sets.

Junior transfer Natalija Dordevic (Belgrade, Serbia) recorded a team-high 22 kills, while Encinas, once again, set a new career high with 46 assists. Encinas has recorded new career highs in four of the seven matches this season. Dordevic hit .390 for the match, while Swan tallied 15 kills.

In the invite finale, AIC claimed the first set, 25-23, but fell in straight sets; 25-27, 24-26 and 23-25.

Encinas came out on fire again, recording 54 assists. She averaged 10.93 assists-per-set over the weekend and moved to first in the NE-10 with 10.04 assists this season.

Dordevic finished with 22 kills and 4.75 kills-per-set for the invite. She, too, leads the NE-10 with 4.59 kills-per-set. For her efforts, she was named to the All-Tournament team.

Sophomore libero Mercy Rivera (Canovanas, P.R.) registered 48 digs and ranks third the league with 130 total for the season.

AIC returns to action Friday, Sep. 18 when they host the International Hall of Fame Invitational. The Yellow Jackets open the weekend with a 3:30 p.m. tilt against Ohio Valley University.
