SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Senior Trahmier Burrell (Albany, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards, but American International College fell to Pace, 70-60, in Northeast-10 men's basketball action this evening from the Butova Gymnasium.
AIC remains winless, falling to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the Northeast-10 while the Setters improve to 3-4 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.
Neither squad could generate much offense during the early minutes before AIC used a 12-2 run midway through the first half thanks in large to a pair of three balls from Burrell and junior Justin Daniel (Fort Worth, Tx.) to grab their largest lead of the half 15-7 at the 8:16 mark.
The Setters then closed the half controlling the game and grabbing the momentum as they went into the locker room trailing just 23-21. Sophomore Bryan Rivers (West Windsor, N.J.) collected all six of his first-half points over the final 4:26 for Pace.
The second half started off stagnant as well until seniors Kyle Pearson (Woodbridge, N.J.) and Shelton Mickell (Queens, N.Y.) drained back-to-back three's to give Pace the five point lead at 35-30 with 14:04 on the clock.
However, the Jackets used a six point spurt of their own over the next two and a half minutes to regain the lead at 36-35.
Pace wasn't flustered and came back to register points on seven straight possessions as part of a 16-4 run to give them the 51-40 advantage at the 7:04 mark. The Setters would then grab the largest lead of the game by either team of 15 after Mickell drained four straight from the charity stripe following coincidental personal and technical fouls with 3:59 to play.
Senior Cameron Dobbs (Albany, N.Y.) attempted a comeback for AIC has he drained a pair from behind the line with under two minutes to play pulling them to within 10 at 67-57, but the Setters hit their free-throws and dribbled out the clock for the final score.
Dobbs finished with a game-high 15 points while junior Juwan Moody (Pontiac, Mich.) added 11 to lead the offense.
Rivers also totaled 15 points in the game for the visitors while sophomore Victor Jusino (Morris Plains, N.J.) added 14 as the Setters had four double-digit scorers as they shot 42.9 percent from the field (24-for-56 including 66.7 percent with 6-for-10 from three-point range in the second half.
AIC shot 37 percent (20-for-54) from the floor for the game and held the slim 34-32 edge on the glass.
The Jackets return to action on Saturday with a non-conference battle at Bridgeport with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
