SPRINGFIELD, Mass. On a very cold and raw October night the American International College men's soccer team battled to a 0-0 double-overtime draw with Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening from Abdow Field.
AIC moves to 3-3-3 overall and 1-2-3 in conference play while Assumption is now 1-6-3 and 1-2-3 in the NE-10
The Greyhounds had the first bid to score on the first shot of the game as junior Kyle Santoro (Millbury, Mass.) ran up the right side of the box and used the slick turf to send a low skip shot toward the near post that was met by a diving Sebastian Tamayo (Stratford, Conn.) keeping the game scoreless in the 18th minute.
Assumption controlled possession most of the opening frame not allowing the Jackets a shot on goal over the first 45 minutes of play as the held the 7-2 edge in shots and 4-0 advantage on target heading into the intermission.
The Hounds continued to control the game and nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute as sophomore Conor Henry (Northborough, Mass.) sent a great ball into the box to find junior Johnny Aviza (Medway, Mass.), but his bid sailed well high and over the crossbar.
The Jackets had a great chance to grab the first score of the game as senior Alec Cerquiera (Peabody, Mass.) raced up the left side of the box to find classmate Jason Burnusuz (Westfield, Mass.), however, his attempt went just wide of the far post keeping the game scoreless in the 87th minute and leading to extra time.
The teams couldn't get anything generated in the first free frame, but in the second it was Cerquiera setting up senior Ed Sharman (Tunbridge Wells, England) with a cross from the left and Sharman's header bid cleared just outside the left post keeping the game 0-0 in the 103rd minute.
AIC kept the pressure on and off a free kick from senior Frazer Cronin (Bromley, England) the ball bounced off multiple Yellow Jackets heads and it was Burnusuz heading it to sophomore Lamar Grogan (Toronto, Canada), but his bid didn't have much on it and was easily stopped by senior Dana King (Windham, Maine) in the 107th minute.
Sharman had another late bid that was met by a diving King and the final horn sounded for the 0-0 draw.
Tamayo made 6 saves while his counterpart, King, stopped three shots all in the final five minutes to record the shutout.
Assumption held the 15-8 lead in shots including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal while also holding the slim advantage in corner kicks 5-2.
AIC returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to Bloomsburg University for their final non-conference tilt of the season with a 4 p.m. affair.
