WEST HAVEN, Conn. American International College senior forward Alec Cerquiera (Peabody, Mass.) charged men's soccer past New Haven Saturday night at Della-Camera Stadium, 1-0.
With the win AIC improves to 4-5-4 and 2-3-4 in NE-10 matches, while with the loss New Haven drops to 4-9-0 overall and 1-8-0 in league play.
Cerquiera's team-leading seventh goal of the season came late in another defense-laden match for the Yellow Jackets. Fellow senior forward Ed Sharman (Tunbridge Wells, England) put the ball right in the center of the cage where Cerquiera was able to sneak it past the keeper for the game-winner.
AIC battered the Chargers with shots, outshooting New Haven on target, 17-4. Sharman had a plethora of chances, coming away with seven shots on goal. Charger keeper Stephen Sasso made 15 saves in the losing effort.
Yellow Jacket keeper Sebastian Tamayo (Stratford, Conn.) made four saves in the win. AIC picked up three crucial points in the Northeast-10 standings and move up to a tie for ninth overall with Assumption.
With four games remaining, AIC sits three points behind Saint Rose and Saint Michael's for a spot in the postseason. The Yellow Jackets will have a chance to make moves in their next match when they travel to face the Golden Knights of Saint Rose on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Game-time is slated for 5:30 p.m. from Albany, N.Y.
