ALBANY, N.Y. The American International baseball team scored five straight runs to down the College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 tilt Wednesday afternoon, 5-2.
With the win AIC improves to 8-17 overall and 3-12 in the NE-10, while with the loss Saint Rose falls to 9-16 and 5-3 in conference play.
Starting on the mound, lefty Matt Lee (Stratford, Conn.) gave up two first inning runs before settling down, going 4.2 scoreless with four strikeouts.
Right fielder David Kerlejza (Unionville, Conn.) got the offense started in the top of the third doubling in two runs, catcher Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) and shortstop Eddie Ritch (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.).
Fenton singled in the go-ahead and eventual game-winner run in a three run seventh, plating second baseman Brett Bohl (Ludlow, Mass.).
Center fielder Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and Ritch came home on a throwing error. AIC added one more off a Golden Knight error when designated hitter Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error to short, allowing Asselin to scamper home for an extra insurance run.
Jeff Kraucunas (Enfield, Conn.) pitched 2.1 innings of relief, picking up the win, while Kevin Wnukowski (Douglas, Mass.) got the save in the ninth.
Golden Knight Bryan Carr suffered the loss for St. Rose, striking out three. Starter Joe Poktrenkowski did not factor in the decision, leaving with a two-run lead after three.
Ritch and Fenton each went 2-of-4 from the plate, while Kerlejza knocked in two.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, April 12 with a doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State starting at noon.
