Game Recap: Baseball |

Paige cruises in game one, Baseball splits with SCSU, 5-2, 3-5

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-Sophomore pitcher Harrison Paige (Springfield, Mass.) was dialed in, twirling a complete game as the American International College baseball team topped the Southern Connecticut State Owls 5-2.

It was AIC that got on the board right off the bat, striking in the home half of the first, stringing a pair of hits together with two outs when senior center fielder Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) stroked a double to center and junior DH Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) followed that up with a single to center.

In the fourth, AIC added to the lead, opening the frame with a single by junior left fielder David Kerlejza (Unionville, N.Y.); after he took second on a wild pitch, he was driven in by a base hit off the bat of junior first baseman Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.).

The Owls scored in the fourth, but the Jackets replied with three of their own, with Vallas reaching on an error that Kerlejza made them pay for with a long home run to center field and then scoring an additional run thanks to a single by sophomore third baseman Tyler Geffert (Hopedale, Mass.) that was followed up by a pair of throwing errors which allowed him to score.

The Owls scored in the eighth, unearned, but could not do more damage, and Paige came out throwing a one-two-three ninth to finish the game off.

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the second inning in game two. Geffert singled to right and advanced to third on an error, easily scoring Kerlezja and Vallas.

In the ensuing inning, the Owls cut the deficit in half, but a Vallas single to plate Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) gave AIC back the two run lead, but SCSU would respond.

An two-run homer in the top of seventh started the rally as the Owls added two more in the eighth and hung on for the 5-3 win and the doubleheader split.

Sophomore Michael Gentile (Windsor Locks, Conn.) pitched seven, striking out five, but did not factor in the decision.

AIC returns to the diamond tomorrow, April 13 at noon to finish off the three game series against Southern Connecticut.
