SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International baseball team scored first, but fell to Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 contest Sunday afternoon at AIC Park, 4-1.
With the loss AIC falls to 9-19 and 3-13 in the NE-10, while with the win SCSU improves to 14-10-1 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
After three-and-a-half scoreless, center fielder Andy Cherico (Rehoboth, Mass.) knocked in AIC's lone run, first baseman Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) to give the Yellow Jackets the early 1-0 edge.
Yellow Jacket starter David Kerlezja (Unionville, Conn.) pitched six scoreless before allowing the game-tying run in the visitor half of the seventh. The Owls added two more off Kerlezja in the eighth and an insurance run, unearned, against reliever Kevin Wnukowski (Douglas, Mass.) in the ninth.
AIC's best chance to bring back the Owls was in the eighth. Left fielder Tyler Geffert (Hopedale, Mass.) and Coyne each singled to get on fist and second. Cam MacDonald (Weymouth, Mass.) pinch hit and drew a walk after being hit, but freshman Garrett Demers (Cranston, R.I.) struck out looking, stranding three.
SCSU starter Tyler Albrecht earned the win, striking out seven in seven innings. Rocco Cundari got the four out save, getting Demers looking to end the eighth.
AIC returns to action Friday, April 18, a doubleheader against Bloomfield beginning at noon.
