WEST HAVEN, Conn. The American International baseball team dropped two to the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 doubleheader Saturday afternoon, 5-3 and 6-2.
With the losses AIC falls to 11-21 overall and 4-16 in the NE-10, while with the win New Haven improves to 14-8 and 9-6 in conference games.
The Yellow jackets jumped on top first in the second. Second baseman Brett Bohl (Ludlow, Mass.) knocked in two first baseman Mike Coyne (El Cajon, Calif.) and left fielder Tyler Geffert (Hopedale, Mass.) to give AIC an early 2-0 edge.
New Haven got on the board in the third and added three more in the fourth off two doubles.
Bohl came through again in the sixth, plating Geffert for the second time, but a Charger homer put them back up two and hung on for the gam one win.
AIC knocked around 12 hits, four Yellow Jackets tallied multi-hit games.
Sophomore starter Harrison Paige (Springfield, Mass.) pitched all eight, striking out seven and walking none, but suffered his third loss of the year, giving up all five earned runs.
On the mound for New Haven, Pat Simone pitched six, striking out three and walking just one.
In game two, freshman Mike Gentile (Windsor Locks, Conn.) lost his first decision of the season, pitching just three-and-a-third with zero strikeouts.
Geffert scored his third run of the day, advancing home on a wild pitch thrown by Charger starter John Melville. Third baseman Justin Carey ( Amherst, Mass.) scored AIC's only other run, sent home on a single from catcher Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.).
Geffert and right fielder David Kerlezja (Unionville, Conn.) each went 2-for-4, accounting for four of AIC's seven hits.
AIC and New Haven reconvene Monday, April 21 back in West Haven for the three-game series finale beginning at 3:30 p.m.
