WEST HAVEN, Conn.-The American International College baseball team dropped a heartbreaker in ten innings, 6-5, to the New Haven Chargers in Northeast-10 play.
AIC falls to 11-22 overall and 3-8 in the NE-10's Southwest Division, while the Chargers improve to 15-8 overall and 5-3 in the division.
The Chargers had a chance to score in the first, but a relay from senior center fielder
Dan Asselin (Chicopee, Mass.) to sophomore shortstop
Eddie Ritch (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) to graduate catcher
Dan Fenton (Agawam, Mass.) cut a runner down at home for the final out of the frame.
AIC started off the third with a bang, getting a single to center from sophomore second baseman
Brett Bohl (Ludlow, Mass.) that was followed up by back-to-back bunt singles by freshman third baseman Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.) and Ritch, and then Fenton stroked an 0-2 pitch to right to plate Bohl and Carey. Then, junior designated hitter
Lucas Vallas (East Northport, N.Y.) ripped his second double of the game down the left field line to bring in Ritch, though Fenton was cut down at home.
The Chargers got back all the runs in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a pair of hits and a pair of errors, but the Jackets retook the lead in the very next half inning, with Ritch singling, advancing on a groundout, and then beating the throw home on a single by Asselin.
Again the Chargers took advantage of AIC's sloppiness in the fifth, with a runner advancing to third from first on a throwing error, allowing New Haven to bunt him home. The Chargers then loaded the bases in the seventh, and managed to eke out a fifth run to take the lead.
It only took one pitch for the Jackets to tie it, however, as Vallas hit a laser to left field over the twelve-foot high fence for his team-high third home run of the season to lead off the eighth.
The Chargers threatened in the ninth with a one out double, but sophomore reliever
Jeff Kraucunas (Enfield, Conn.) picked up back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat and force extras.
In the tenth, the Chargers got a runner to third after another error, and ultimately walked off with a single to center.
AIC returns home to host the Saint Rose Golden Knights Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
